Vacancies at the Coalition of African Lesbians: Director of Development

The Coalition of African Lesbians is a women’s rights organisation working on all women’s rights issues and developing the ideas of radical African lesbian feminisms. We are a coalition of members in 15 countries. We have a Support Office in Johannesburg, South Africa where we are registered as a Non-Profit Organisation.

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa (Applicants need to have right to work in South Africa.)

Salary:  Negotiable

Job Purpose:

The Development Director provides leadership and manages all aspects of the overall governance and internal operations of the organisation including human, technical and financial resources, administration and communications of the organisation to ensure the effective organising and programming at CAL in keeping with the Constitution of CAL and the mandates of the CAL General Assembly.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Development is accountable for ensuring the ongoing development and strengthening of the internal functioning of the organisation. This includes knowledge, skills and experience in the management of the financial, administrative, communications, monitoring and evaluation and membership related functions of the organisation so that it is able to deliver on its mandate to members. The position requires a high level of knowledge, skill and experience at the policy and strategy levels with significant experience in organisational operations across multiple locations. The successful candidate will be a team builder, have a strong track record in working with membership organisations and multiple donors and have experience in management at multiple levels.

The Director of Development will report, alongside the Director: Programmes, to the Board of CAL and should meet the following criteria:

  1. Strong operational management background
  2. Committed to building relationships and solidarity and passionate about team building
  3. Subscribe to feminist values
  • Ability to work with others to ensure the best possible working environment and processes are in place within the organisation
  • Ability to build teams and to coordinate multiple functions and tasks often in complex contexts
  1. An excellent communicator and able to work in shared leadership framework
  • Ability to establish and sustain donor relationships and to lead on raising funds for the work of the organisation
  • An ability to manage and oversee use of human, financial and administrative resources accountably
  • The creation of an enabling environment for staff to do their work and to develop themselves and their careers
  • Knowledge of and ability to establish and sustain systems and processes to work within the legal frameworks related to Non-profit organisations
  • Policy making skills to ensure standards are in place for accountability, transparency and meaningful participation in CAL processes and activities
  • Ability and experience in ensuring implementation of complex plans in a constantly shifting and hostile context
  • Knowledge of evaluation frameworks, systems and tools and the debates that are underway on these
  • Ability to solve problems and manage crises
  1. Holding the desired candidate should be able to work in South Africa or something to that effect.
  • A qualification in a relevant field at a minimum of Bachelors level
  • A qualification in a relevant field at a minimum of Bachelors level
  1. Strong fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders; experience with major donors and donor database.
  2. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
  3. Knowledge and skills in monitoring and evaluation
  4. Between 5 and 10 years’ experience in some or all of the above
