CAL is an activist organization engaging in direct action to demonstrate our resistance and rage against those who oppress us; we mobilises our communities and others to take action against patriarchy, homophobia and other forms of oppression; lobby those in power to make decisions that advance our rights; by constantly developing our own analysis and thinking based on our personal and lived experiences and realities and learning from others. In this process we engage in creating and producing queer and feminist knowledge, through media and consciousness raising work with the objectives of influencing the ideas, beliefs and understanding of broader society about justice for LBTQ people.

CAL’s ideology is rooted in an analysis of patriarchy and intersecting bases of oppression including race, class, gender, geography, HIV status, age, gender expression, sexual orientation and other factors. As such, the issue that connects different parts of our work with different movements is that of the demand for autonomy over our bodies and lives as people on the margins.  This includes lesbian women and women who have sex with women, women who are sex workers, young women, women living with HIV and those working on and seeking abortion services, and all criminalised, stigmatised and marginalised based on sexuality and gender related factors.  (www.cal.org.za )

Media & Communications officer

The Media & Communications officer contributes to CAL’s overall organisational goals and objectives by producing and disseminating key organisational advocacy messages and content to external audiences, as well as amplifying and building support for CAL’s political work. In addition the Media & Communications officer will support CAL’s work by providing technical assistance in ICT tools and strategies into CAL’s internal and external work.

Job purpose

The Media & Communications officer will support the creation and the implementation of media campaigns,and communication plans that articulate CAL’s politics clearly and consistently to diverse audiences in order to affect positive change. The officer will as well support the development and implementation of ICT tools that help CAL reach its various objectives of organising, mobilising and advocating for social change.

Duties

The Media & Communications officer will report to the Media & Communications Manager, and will have the overall responsibility of undertaking media and communications activities such as the implementation of the production and broadcasting of CAL’s key messages as defined by CAL’s media strategy as well as supporting CAL’s technological infrastructure and development that enables programmatic and institutional activities, and our members and partners national and regional work. Specific duties will include:

  • Support the creation and/or the maintenance of platforms that enable the mobilising, organising and advocacy work that CAL is undertaking in multiple spaces such as social media marketing, mobile apps for organising, website development, and multimedia creation, edition and broadcasting.
  • Monitor the current online discourse on sexuality and gender and suggest appropriate strategies and communications to influence public discourse on these issues.
  • Provide trainings on ICT, social media applications and media production to our members and partners.
  • Participate in an ongoing strategic process related to the domain of African feminist ideas and what is necessary to communicate these to multiple target audiences.
  • Engage in the design, development, testing and production of campaigns, media and communication products as a tool to advance CAL’s African radical feminist agenda.

Formal requirements

  • Up to five years of working experience or a track record in the production and dissemination of organisational and feminist media & campaigns.
  • Excellent IT skills related to media production: video editing, audio editing, website development, graphic design, social media and other online platforms.
  • Knowledge and experience of creating and supporting the production of activist media in collaboration with multiple partners.
  • Research skills.
  • Strong writing and reporting skills in English, good writing and reporting skills in French is a plus.
  • A good knowledge of the online and mainstream media landscape in the continent.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a discipline related to the production of media and / or social sciences relevant to the production of feminist media and any other relevant disciplines from a tertiary education institution is a plus.
